U. L. Harman was started in 1913 by Thaddeus Harman as a flour and feed mill. In 1917 at Thaddeus' death, his son U. L. (age 17) assumed the responsibilities of running the business for his mother, and helped raise his six brothers and sisters as well. In 1939 U. L. added lumber and building supplies to the feed business. Starting in 1949 he was joined by his sons, making the third generation to enter the business. The fourth generation joined in the 1970's and the fifth generation started full-time employment in 1999. The business was incorporated in 1957 as U. L. Harman, Inc. Due to the rise of corporate chicken production the feed business was dropped at that time. Today U. L. Harman operates 10 delivery vehicles with 38 employees. In addition to lumber and building materials, the company has a Kitchen Design and Flooring Department, offers installed sales, and has a full building division specializing in new home construction, remodeling, roofing & siding, and window replacement.
